Disillusioned; from Texas.

In 2005 Sherri, a great admirer of Royalty, dreamt of Britain as a very ‘proper and noble’ place. The reality as she discovered was somewhat different.

Sherri, 32, Nurse, Texas: “I recently began corresponding with British penpals. Before that, I had imagined that England would be a great place to live and work. Now I know better. The picture I get is about a struggling middle class, that can barely keep up with taxes that are not only used to support royals, but increasing numbers of foreigners who come for free health care, housing, etc. Everything is expensive, and working class people are barely able to make it. Everyone is hoping for change, but with each election, no one really expects anything to be done.

As an American, a middle-class one at that, I understand some of what the British people are going through, though certainly not on that scale. I know people so disillusioned with it all, that they no longer even want to live there.”

She remains deeply puzzled by Yorkshire pudding.
